Establishes and monitors quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results. Collects and studies blood samples to determine the number of cells, their morphology, blood group, blood type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques. Analyzes samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction. Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components. Helps identify abnormalities in the samples such as malignancies, bacteria, parasites, or genetic abnormalities. May also assist in blood typing or other routine blood tests. Provides technical information about test results to physicians, family members, and researchers. Performs other duties as assigned. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Organizes work and manages the use of time to complete technical tasks within realistic time limits. Controls laboratory equipment and adjusts instruments to perform laboratory procedures. Uses computers to operate laboratory instruments and calculate, record, evaluate, and transmit data. Analyzes and interprets laboratory results with considerable judgment across all areas of the laboratory, including hematology, chemistry, special chemistry, serology, blood bank, microbiology, and urinalysis. Maintains instruments and lab sections as assigned, including scheduled maintenance and monitoring consumables. Performs specimen collection on patients of all age groups. This includes venipuncture, capillary draws, culturing sites, and instructing nursing staff on the correct method of sample collection.
