About the Position

Job Title: Surgical Technologist Profession: Nursing Specialty: Surgical Technologist, Scrub Technologist, OR Tech Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Days Hours per Shift: 32 Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: Licensed as a Surgical Technologist in the state required. Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association. Must-Have: Completion of a Certified Surgical Technologist program and/or Licensed Surgical Technologist. Description: Assists during surgical procedures by ensuring and maintaining the integrity of a sterile surgical field and providing instrumentation as needed to the surgical team. Participates in unit activities that assure high levels of quality related to patient care. Functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique. Combines knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies in the performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Maintains and checks all items for proper packaging, processing, moisture, seal, packaging integrity, sterile indicator if present, and expiration dates. Ensures that the operating room environment is safe and that equipment functions properly. Conducts the operative procedure under conditions that maximize patient safety. Monitors sterile field for events that may contaminate, interfere, or alter field and initiates or notifies of need for corrective action under supervision. Works towards competency or is competent with Tier 1 surgical cases. Maintains flexibility while contributing to the individualized, ongoing delivery of care within the scope of practice. Models effective, timely communication with the perioperative team with full participation in the Time Out Process. Assists the team in patient transports, room turnovers, and room preparation. Models professional behavior to include maintaining currency in new technologies and procedures, including instrumentation and equipment. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Role models the principles of safety culture and performs other duties as assigned. Must be compliant with privacy regulations. It is common to encounter potential hazards in the healthcare environment. Some hazards may include radiation, toxic chemicals, biological hazards, heat, noise, dust, and stress. The position requires physical activity and the ability to lift various weights repeatedly throughout the workday. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the functions of this position. Communicates effectively, clearly, and timely. Must be able to maintain punctuality and routine attendance to impact patient care positively. Ability to work under stress and to deadlines while working independently or with others. This position does provide patient care.
