About the Position

Job Title: Surgical Technician Profession: Nursing Specialty: Surgical Technologist, Sterile Processing Technologist Duration: 9 Months Shift: Generally 6:30 AM - 2:30 PM M-F with rotating On Call for nights and weekends Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 5 Years License: Registered as a Surgical Technologist Certifications: Certified Surgical Technician (CST) Must-Have: - Minimum of 5 years current experience as a Surgical Technician - Registered as a Surgical Technologist Description: The Surgical Technician functions as part of the surgical healthcare team, providing technical support to surgeons, RNs, and anesthesia providers in the operating room setting. He/she works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. During the operation, the Surgical Technician arranges supplies and instruments and keeps an accurate count of these at all times. They pass instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgeon, help apply dressings, and assist in preparing and preserving specimens taken for testing. In the Sterile Processing area, the Surgical Technician operates the sterilizers and runs various tests to validate and verify sterilization of surgical instruments. They are also responsible for validating sterility of packaged supplies. The Surgical Technician is responsible for cleaning and decontaminating surgical instruments following their use in surgery after regular hours. They check instruments before cases for proper sterility and ensure instruments are in proper working condition before and after cases. The Surgical Technician uses principles of aseptic practice in varying situations. They inspect sterile items for contamination before opening. They maintain sterility while opening sterile items for procedures. They anticipate the need for supplies and equipment. They check supplies for outdates, restock the operating room, and order supplies to maintain an adequate on-hand supply. The Surgical Technician reports directly to the Surgical Services Department Manager. Special Demands: Mental: Moderate to high stress. Physical/emotional stamina to perform effectively in stressful situations. Ability to adjust and interact with a wide variety of job situations involving different people and projects. Physical: Long periods of standing, walking, and heavy lifting. Exposure to blood and body fluids, unpleasant sights, smells, and infectious diseases may occur.
