Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician Profession: Medical Laboratory Specialty: Clinical Laboratory Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Evenings with rotating weekends Hours per Shift: Not specified Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Certification/registration or certification/registry eligible as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician is required. Certifications: National certification (AMT or ASCP) required upon completion of probation. Must-Have: Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or related area of specialty. Description: The Laboratory Technologist (MLT or MT) works under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager. They are responsible for performing laboratory tests and accurately reporting results to the physician for use in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. The technologist assists in the general operation of the laboratory, quality assurance programs, and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Independent judgment and professional education are essential to this role. After probation is satisfactorily completed, the Laboratory Technologist will supervise waived, moderate, and high complexity testing. They will adhere to the organization's mission and values. Essential Job Functions: Performs tasks, duties, and complex tests in all areas of the laboratory as assigned. This includes hematology, immunohematology, immunology, bacteriology, microscopy, routine chemistry, and therapeutic drug monitoring according to established protocols and procedures. Performs phlebotomies, including arterial punctures, capillary punctures, and venipunctures as appropriate for the patient. Processes specimens utilizing protocols and technical knowledge. Calibrates, standardizes, and maintains instruments following established procedures. Performs quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting protocols to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures. Prepares and maintains reagent supplies necessary to perform tests. Validates and reports results of tests performed accurately and in a timely manner. Assists in the maintenance and development of laboratory policy and procedural manuals. Assists with orientation and teaching of students and new employees. Researches and develops new procedures as assigned. Follows established safety practices, including biohazard protocols and infection control measures. Promotes effective working relationships within the department and across units. Attends all in-service education as required. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees. Seeks out needed information by staying informed and involved. Maintains reliable attendance and punctuality. Performs duties in a safe manner, compliant with all safety policies and procedures. Complies with all relevant policies and procedures. Physical Effort and Environment: Active role requiring frequent lifting up to 50 pounds independently. Requires visual acuity correctable to 20/20 and color vision. Involves walking, standing, kneeling, and bending most of the time. Exhibits fine motor skills and manual dexterity necessary to perform essential functions. Must be able to function in limited space and with frequent interruptions. Must adapt to temperature variations and moderate noise levels from equipment within the laboratory. Exposure Risk: Employee is at risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Quality Improvement: Maintains current knowledge of Quality Improvement initiatives. Collaborates with management to improve departmental effectiveness through Quality Improvement plans. Participates in departmental and organizational Quality Improvement activities as directed. Compliance: Adheres to federal, state, and local statutes and regulations. Adheres to Compliance Program policies and procedures. Communicates any compliance or confidentiality concerns to appropriate officers.
