PHLEBOTOMIST RESPONSIBILITIES: * Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups. * Phlebotomist accurately documents patient information and enters it in a timely manner. * Prepare all collected specimens for testing and analysis. * Phlebotomist maintains patient and specimen information logs. * Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing. * Checks the test requisition or computer label to assure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples. * The Phlebotomist follows all safety, infection control, and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen guidelines. * Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc. * Phlebotomist collects and stores specimens according to established procedures. * Demonstrate technique/s using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. * Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. * Phlebotomist checks all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure it’s 100% correct. * Package specimens for transport. * Phlebotomist stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, and follows different procedures as outlined by specific protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen. * Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. * Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required. * Phlebotomist maintains a cooperative working relationship with patients, patients’ families, medical staff, and co-worker
