Shifts: 12-hour days Department/Unit - Magnetic Resonance Imaging Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Ambulatory CT/MRI or MRI Assistant Manager and according to Radiologist's directions and established procedures, operates magnetic resonance imaging scanner to obtain images for use by physicians for the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. Positions patients for procedure, administers injections of contrast media, operates scanners to visualize pathologies, manipulates images to create optimal studies, distributes images to the PACS system and may reproduce images on alternate media as necessary. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Although duties may vary by assigned area or shift, the following accurately describes the essential job functions. State license status must be currently active Minimum of 2 years of MRI experience required Principal duties and responsibilities: Receives, reviews and evaluates physician orders and patient schedules for MRI exams. May contact physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals as necessary to verify/clarify orders and/or discuss patient conditions/histories in order to obtain the highest quality images. Greets patients and according to established procedures, prepares patients for MRI exam by ensuring proper patient identification, transporting patients between waiting area/patient room and procedure room, and assisting patients with dressing and undressing. Demonstrates the ability to perform procedures at all levels of patient care from pediatric to adult. Follows CMS, Joint Commission or other third party agency guidelines to properly identify patients and maintain patient safety. Explains procedures to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain patient cooperation. Provides instructions on procedure or patient preparation as necessary. Interviews patients and/or family to obtain medical history relevant to MRI procedures. Verifies patients’ allergies and renal function and screens patients for implanted medical devices or other items that may interfere with patient safety or image quality. Completes required documentation for each patient. Screens female patients for possibility for pregnancy. Ensures pregnancy testing is completed on female patients meeting criteria. Documents such results appropriately. Prepares examination room by turning on all equipment including MRI scanners, computers, PACS equipment and the like. Ensures equipment is in proper working order. Assists patient on and off of the MRI scanner using proper moving/lifting techniques and equipment. Properly positions patient in order to obtain optimal MRI images. Following established protocols, places specified coil/receiver, such as head or knee coil close to the area being examined. Places positioning devices as appropriate to ensure proper positioning and patient safety. Operates magnetic resonance imaging equipment and enters commands necessary to adjust transmitters and receivers, visualize and manipulate screen images to obtain best possible image. Enters data into the computer to identify anatomical area being scanned, position of patient entry into scanner and orientation of images obtained. Operates various peripheral equipment such as disc drives, contrast injectors, video goggles or stereo equipment. Demonstrates the use of the microphone to the patient to allow the patient and technologist to communicate during the procedure. Ensures that all specimens are labeled and processed according to established regulatory criteria. Observes patient through control room window and communicates with patient through closed circuit TV and/or speaker devices to monitor patient safety and comfort. Performs intravenous injections and administers contrast media for examinations following established sterile techniques and methods. Assists physicians in performance of procedures by injecting contrast media, assisting in sterile technique and/or operating peripheral equipment. May perform routine lab specimen collection to check patient pregnancy status, renal function or other routine blood tests. Ensures that all specimens are labeled and processed according to established regulatory criteria. Ensures images and documentation include correct infor¬mation such as patient's name, medical record number, contrast used, procedural code and the like. Reviews images to determine quality of exam and determines the need to retake or obtain additional images. Sends images with appropriate labeling criteria to correct destinations. Uses various computer programs to obtain medical history, order exams and track patient throughput. Completes required documentation for all patients/exams. Scans applicable paperwork into the PACS or other information systems. Routes images using a variety of computer software and hardware systems. Meets the core skills and criteria of a MRI Technologist I as outlined in the MRI Technologist Career Path Program. May conduct QA testing on MRI equipment using phantoms and the like to ensure optimal image quality and maintain compliance with third party, ACR or Joint Commission accreditation requirements. Documents QA testing outcomes on designated log sheets, etc. Participates in image Quality Assurance Program by reviewing and following up on exams that receive QA remarks from interpreting Radiologists and/or the QA Technologist in order to reduce errors and/or repeat exams. Maintains required files and records, and prepares periodic statistical reports, such as number and types of exams performed for review. Ensures appropriate personnel are notified of equipment malfunctions and needed repairs. Ensures necessary maintenance work orders are completed in a timely manner. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition. Monitors inventory and restocks supplies as necessary in order to keep rooms properly supplied for diagnostic proce¬dures. Ensures supplies are not damaged or outdated. May perform a variety of related clerical tasks such as retrieving previous images, answering phones and relaying messages, and completing exam requisitions. May cross train to perform additional tasks and assist other team members in the department. Keeps current regarding developments, trends and techniques in MRI procedures and equipment through appropriate technical journals or in-service and educational programs in order to maintain and enhance expertise. Attends mandatory department, Medical Center meetings, and other work-related educational programs. May be involved in supervision and demonstration of MRI methods, techniques and procedures for students or other department personnel. Participates in the evaluation of the performance of students or other department personnel as necessary. May transport materials between ambulatory locations and the medical center which requires the operation of a medical center or personal vehicle. May be required to support the Level I Trauma Center by providing 24/7 coverage while on duty or by taking call. Certification: ARRT Registry
