October is Physical Therapy Month

physical therapy month

National physical therapy month hits every October to observe the amazing impact physical therapists and physical therapist assistants have by improving the functionality of people’s lives.

#AgeWell Campaign

This year the American Physical Therapy Association has chosen to put its focus on healthy aging. They are aiming to help promote the positive impact that comes from visiting a physical therapist to help older folks overcome the challenges, keep their standard mobility at peak performance, and to keep themselves as independent as they can be as they saunter into their golden years.

As physical therapists, we see the benefit that accompanies movement. In fact, “exercise may be the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth” according to APTA. It’s crucial to use this month to promote the notion that finding the right kinds of exercises can completely rejuvenate your physical condition. PTs are literally experts in helping clients find exercise that will work best for their particular lifestyles and needs.

As part of a positive preventative care regimen, physical therapists can help America’s aging population by educating their clients on the benefits of movement exercises to alleviate their pain, keep themselves living life in top-notch physical form, and maintaining the highest level of independence when they progress into older adulthood. Additionally, physical therapists can give themselves a strong pat on the back for helping others avoid the need for getting placed on long-term prescription drug programs or have to go through costly major surgeries.

The #AgeWell campaign will provide some excellent resources for showcasing the great things that aging individuals can do to age with grace. Also, this month brings to light ways that professionals can counsel patients who are worried about the common aging issues.

Getting Involved

Physical therapists can get proactive this month by sharing all of APTA’s awesome #AgeWell resources or hosting a community event. You can grab some pretty cool resources like event planning guides, media alert samples, and such right here.
